What Is A Mentor?
Spiritual mentoring is a relationship between mentor, mentee and the Holy Spirit. Through this relationship, the mentee seeks to discover what God is already doing in his or her life, and thereby grow in friendship with God, identity in God, and awareness of God’s call.
Purposes of this relationship:
- To enhance intimacy with God. To recognize Gods action in the mentee‘s life.
- To heal from things that hinder spiritual confidence.
- To develop character.
- To help make life-changing decisions.
What are some characteristics of a mentor?
- One who creates a hospitable space of trust and intimacy.
- One who is able to discern God's action in the mentee.
- One who recognizes potential in people.
- One who is affirmed by others as having a life worthy of emulation.
- One who seeks to live a life of authentic holiness, spiritual maturity, biblical knowledge and wisdom.
- One who is familiar with contemplative prayer, listening and other spiritual disciplines.
Who is the mentee?
- One who desires spiritual growth and maturity.
- One who wants to ask serious questions about self, life, and God.
- One who is vulnerable in sharing intimate issues of life.
- One who is responsive and respectful to the directives of the mentor.
A Note From Khy
I am often asked if I am a marriage & family therapist, professional counselor or provide “therapy” in any way. While some of what I do could be considered similar to “therapeutic counseling”, it is not quite the same. Spiritual mentorship, on the other hand, is the exploration of a person’s “spiritual path” – a mentor will be used by God in listening with deep reflection and discernment. Christian mentoring is ultimately the amazing work of the Holy Spirit through a personalized, authentic, life-to-life exchange between two people. The results, therefore, focus not on psychological healing, but rather on spiritual wholeness in Christ.
